What happens when I launch an Install & Play game?

Understand the Steam, publisher, update, and setup screens that may appear before your game starts.

Written by ONMO+ Support

When you launch an Install & Play game, Steam and any services required by the game may open before gameplay begins. Some games also require additional setup, particularly on the first launch or after an update.

Do not close Steam or leave the session while the game is starting. Wait for the required steps to finish and for the game to open.

Steam or another launcher opens

Steam opens as part of the normal launch process. Some games also require a publisher account or third-party launcher, such as Ubisoft Connect or the Rockstar Games Launcher. If another launcher asks you to sign in, use the account associated with that publisher and follow the instructions shown on screen.

The game downloads an update

If an update is required, it may download before the game can start. Wait for the update to complete, then relaunch the game from Steam Library if it does not start automatically. Do not close the session while an update is in progress, as this may interrupt the download.

The game compiles shaders

Some games compile shaders during their first launch or after an update to optimize performance. Wait for the process to finish before playing. Some titles may repeat shader compilation during later sessions.

A licence agreement appears

Some games require you to accept an End User Licence Agreement (EULA) before you can play. Read and accept the agreement to continue. Depending on the game, this agreement may appear again during a later session.

A settings or launch-options window appears

Some games display a launcher, configuration window, or launch-option selection screen before starting. Choose the appropriate options, then select Play or Launch to continue. These windows may include options for graphics quality, resolution, display mode, or audio.
